Our men’s water polo team began their season with two games over the weekend in Sheffield with games against Cheltenham and home team Sheffield, we welcomed back Scott Sharpe and Declan Ellwood after a few seasons away after losing Glen Robinson to retirement at the end of last season.
Our first game was against Cheltenham on saturday with goals from Tom Curwen and Scott Sharpe we had the lead 2-1 after the first quarter before our defence seemed to lose their concentration and they lost the following quarter 8-0 which effectively killed the game off. The second half was a much more even affair with city scoring through Scott 2 Tom Curwen 2 Ryan Pinington, Alex Armstrong and Stefano Cossutti making the final score 17-9.
After a change of tactics on the Sunday we took on home side Sheffield, again starting brightly scoring through Curwen, Harrington and a beautiful long range shot from Cossutti we led 3-0. Into the 2nd period our strong defence continued through keeper Marc Robinson and defensive players Rob Simpson and Jordan Titly they allowed Sheffield only limited opportunities and again kept a clean sheet whilst extending their lead to 5-0.
The second half Sheffield came out fighting and scored four quick goals on the bounce before a reply from captain Tom Curwen steadied Lancaster. The fourth quarter we regrouped with Mo Agha causing problems for Sheffield from the centre forward position, Arron Mason and Titley working magic down the wing City with won the quarter 5-1 with goals from Curwen 2 Pinington, Mason and Harrington.
